Exchanging Our Mammoth Defense Industry for a Smaller, Cheaper, Stronger Military

Throughout President Obama’s first term, he kept Bush’s military leaders in charge of our defense and instituted a surge in Afghanistan. He also took out more terrorists in his first year than Bush did in his entire second term and is progressing on reducing nuclear weapons—one of Reagan’s most fervent wishes, and yet, daily he is proclaimed a socialist or worse.

Our global military presences requires both a powerful federal government and a mammoth defense industry. When big defense companies become indispensable, we should not be surprised at their political clout. What do you think of President Obama’s plan to reduce our huge industrial and military machinery of defense in exchange for a smaller, cheaper, stronger military?

DARPA’s “Plan X” Has Potential to Redefine Global Conflict

When the Stuxnet computer virus disrupted Iran’s nuclear weapons program in 2010, even Luddites realized that cyberwarfare will redefine global conflict.

DARPA’s “Plan X” provides a glimpse into this dark arena, including military strategies to defend cyberspace and online “attack systems.” Check out the article from Wired’s Danger Room, then read Daniel Roelker’s “Pillars of Foundational Cyberwarfare” for an overview of this 21st century threat.

"The Pentagon’s top research arm is unveiling a new, classified cyberwarfare project. But it’s not about building the next Stuxnet, Darpa swears. Instead, the just-introduced “Plan X” is designed to make online strikes a more routine part of U.S. military operations. That will make the son of Stuxnet easier to pull off — to, as Darpa puts it, 'dominate the cyber battlespace.'" Noah Shachtman, WIRED

Weapons makers now suggesting that GOP reconsider tax hikes.

Our global military presence requires a mammoth defense industry, one that consumes nearly half of all military expenditures worldwide. In January, 2013, automatic defense cuts are scheduled to occur under the Budget Control Act. This sequestration has members of Congress and major defense contractors scrambling to dodge this bullet.

Desperate to protect their bottom line, weapons makers now suggest that the GOP consider raising revenues (taxes!). Just maybe those top tier Bush tax cuts should expire to facilitate a budget agreement before the New Year’s deadline. How will Republicans respond to this powerful lobby?

U.S. defense budget constitutes 41% of global military expenses.

Despite the GOP’s incessant complaints that mandated defense budget cuts are too harsh, comparisons of military expenditures worldwide reveal that the U.S. accounted for 41% of all global military expenses in 2011.

Bloomberg.com has analyzed the discussion over next years military budget, and it appears that Republicans will have their work cut out for them if they wish to convincingly argue that the U.S. military budget needs to be protected at all costs.
