Mitch McConnell: U.S. health care ‘already the finest… in the world’

If United States health care is “already the finest… in the world,” why then do we have 30 million still uninsured, why is ours the most expensive, and why are the outcomes worse than those in many other countries?

The answer is simple–our health care system clearly needs reform. Instead of facing the truth, conservatives like Senator Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner are attempting to put the brakes on progress without offering a viable alternative.

For-profit prisons stand to make a killing on the SB1070 ruling.

We are quick to look the other way when undocumented workers take on difficult and dangerous jobs that most Americans will not do, and yet we’re shocked when these “hidden” workers show up in our emergency rooms or try to send their kids to school.

For-profit prisons like Corrections Corporation of America and The GEO Group now stand to make a killing on the SB1070 ruling after raking in hundreds of millions detaining illegal immigrants since ’05. Think they have any interest in immigration reform or legalizing guest workers?

ICYMI: The Ed Show on MSNBC

Montana had it right with their anti-corruption law, but did AG Steve Bullock and Governor Brian Schweitzer make the best arguments they could in asserting state sovereignty?

I joined last night’s Ed Show panel with Joan Walsh and Michael Medved to discuss Scalia’s judicial activism, the Supreme Court ruling on Montana’s anti-corruption law and the controversial Arizona immigration law, SB1070. Take a look at video below if you missed out on last night’s show.

SCOTUS rejects appeal of Blackwater mercenaries in civilian killings.

Despite Blackwater’s rebranding efforts since the 2007 shootings in Baghdad, the four Blackwater security guards responsible for killing 14 Iraqi civilians will finally be held accountable for their actions.

Major problems with private military contractors include: the lack of accountability, rogue missions, questions of loyalty and the enormous expense. How do you feel about hiring private mercenaries to conduct U.S. military operations overseas?

Blocking states’ rights to ban corporate spending is not democracy.

Montana can no longer enforce its “controversial” anti-corruption statute because the U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily ruled it unconstitutional. Multinational corporations being able to buy elections legally is not democracy, it is insanity.

Read this op-ed from Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, and comment below if you think states’ should have the right to ban corporate political spending.

Political extremism becoming more normalized.

Political extremism cannot be allowed to compromise our core liberties. If we choose to remain gullible and ignorant, preferring partisan speeches at flag-waving rallies to hard truths, then we’ll get what we deserve–a Republic in name only.

This recent article from Glenn Greenwald examines how extremist attitudes in Washington are quickly eroding our modern understanding of civil liberties. Take a look, and let me know your thoughts.

This is certifiable insanity.

“Anonymous political speech. Foreign money in U.S. elections. The proliferation of super PACs. How grave a threat do any of things pose to American democracy? Not much, according to a panel of conservative attorneys, who gathered Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.”

“Brad Smith, the former chairman of the Federal Election Commission who co-founded the Center for Competitive Politics, said that he is “not frightened” by the prospect of Brits, Colombians or even Syrians spending money in the U.S. political process.
“I’m not that alarmed if foreigners [want to be involved in U.S. elections],” Smith said. “It doesn’t worry me.”
